Mohanlal takes up the role of a divorcee in the film,Grandmaster. He lives alone in a dark and violent city. Even when unlawful incidents take place around him, he withdraws himself from all responsibilities and is happy to live quietly. But he is forced to change and take up his duties and responsibilities. Like a grandmaster who anticipates his opponents moves well in advance, he proceeds forward. But once, just once, he makes a fatal mistake.

Rediff rated the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and praised the acting of Mohanlal, but it didn't comes to the expectation.
Sify rated the movie as "Above Average" and said that the filim will be a good entertainment to the fans only.
Metromatinee slated Grandmaster is a nice watchable movie and said without Mohanlal the movie will be a flop, the filim is little bit only of Mohanlal.
